The list of players making their Test debut in matches between England and Zimbabwe continues to grow, as Essex bowler Sam Cook has been confirmed to receive his cap at Trent Bridge.

Only six Tests have been played between England and Zimbabwe from 1996 to 2003, resulting in a total of eight debutants. Cook will become the ninth player to debut in the seventh Test between these two teams, which is a one-off match and their first meeting since 2003.

At 27 years old, Cook joins a notable group that includes Andy Waller (Zimbabwe) and Chris Silverwood (England), who both made their debuts in 1996 in Bulawayo, as well as Chris Scofield and Mluleki Nkala, who debuted at Lord’s and Trent Bridge, respectively, during Zimbabwe’s tour of England in 2003.

The last time England and Zimbabwe faced each other in a Test, some debutants had outstanding performances. James Anderson and Richard Johnson both took five-wicket hauls in their respective debuts against Zimbabwe in 2003.

There is a possibility that Cook could match such a remarkable start to his Test career, especially considering his impressive record in the County Championship with Essex. Cook has taken 321 first-class wickets at an average of 19.85, and in the past five seasons, his 227 wickets are the most by any seamer in the County Championship.

“I’m obviously very excited about getting the nod and getting out there,” Cook told reporters at Trent Bridge. “It’s any young cricketer’s dream to pull on the Test shirt for England, so it’s something I hope comes to fruition. I’m really looking forward to it,” said Cook, who will also join Antony McGrath and Sean Ervine as players making their Test debut during an England-Zimbabwe Test.
